Many times people dread the holiday season because of the stress of traveling, houseguests, and endless buffets and cocktails. When really it is during these times that we often have a chance to live life to the fullest.
Dr. Steve, Director of Patient Wellness for Optimal Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center shares some holiday tips and advice for the festive holiday season:
Tip 1: The first thing to do is to celebrate! Live life to the fullest, smile, and make the best of every moment.
Tip 2: Have a plan when you are going out to eat or to a party. Choosing foods that are lower in sugar and fat, and high in lean protein will help keep you on track for optimal health.
Tip 3: Remember, healthy habits are not blips! Keep in mind that it is not one or two days that dictate what our health status will be! Small blips can occur, but small changes to your holiday habits will have a significant impact on your health status.
Tip 4: Get moving! It is very important to keep your activity levels up this time of year. If your body is used to revving up every day and you slow down or stop it, it is likely that your body composition would change in the negative direction. Even just taking time to walk the stairs or around the house is good!
Tip 5: Make sure you take some time for yourself. 10 to 15 minutes of quiet time a day can revitalize you. Give yourself permission to sneak off in a quiet area and be alone Also, when you find yourself in situations where you begin to feel your stress level increase, remove yourself from that space and take a walk. Physical activity is one of the best ways to decrease stress.
Tip 6: Try to maintain your routine. This includes eating and sleeping at your regularly scheduled times. Try not to dwell on the fact that you may be having trouble sleeping, make sure the room is dark and you mind has time to relax before sleep.
Tip 7: Remember, this is your life, you are in control, you have reasons why you want to live optimally. Enjoy it!
