People who eat a “closed handful” of nuts every day (about an ounce) showed a 20% lower risk of dying from any cause over a 30 year period according to researchers. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this study demonstrated a 29% reduced risk of dying of heart disease and even an 11 % reduced risk of dying of cancer.
The type of nut appeared to have little effect on the results, as Brazil nuts, cashews, peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and walnuts were all associated with healthy outcomes. In general, patients should avoid salted nuts as this can raise blood pressure.
