Optimal Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center nutritionist Dr. Donna, presents a sample day of quick and easy heart healthy recipes to try out in your diet. These recipes were also featured in a cooking demonstration at Optimal Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center’s May event, The Heart of It All: Don’t Lose Sight of Your Why. . Here, check out two suggestions from Dr. Donna for a healthy breakfast to get your day going.
Option 1: Health in a Bottle Smoothie
Ingredients:
- Handful of spinach or kale
- Almonds
- Baby carrots
- Apple and pear slice
- Flax seed
- Crushed ice
- Water
Add all ingredients together in a pulverizing blender (NutriBullet) until all ingredients are mixed well and the consistency is smooth throughout. This should take between 2 – 3 minutes. Enjoy this burst of vitamins and minerals to kick off any day!
Option 2: Quick Fix Waffles

Ingredients:
- Whole wheat frozen waffle (Van’s)
- Organic almond or peanut butter (low sugar and low sodium, if available)
- Sliced banana or strawberries
Heat waffles in a toaster or toaster oven for the time directed on the box. Once heated, spread a light topping of nut butter to the waffle to incorporate protein into the meal. Top with banana or strawberry for natural sweetness and enjoy.
